I started working on a new story last night. It's a story about a woman whose daughter is stolen from her, and the only man that can help get her back is, from all the mother can tell, on the edge of insanity. It's a story about a man who has lived between worlds for nearly his whole life, and he does whatever he can to stay grounded in reality, be it drugs or self-inflicted pain or flirtations with death. It's a story about two people from opposite ends of life who come together to save a little girl from the people on the other side. Think Momento meets Flightplan.

It was really nice to actually be writing again. Previous to this, and post-Clarion, I had only been working on existing material (with one exception that I hope to post about soon). I haven't been idle, though it certainly feels like it. I had five Clarion stories to rewrite. That took quite a while, and was a challenge, since I was trying to incorporate all my Clarion knowledge and suggestions into the rewrites. Three out of those five were very heavy rewrites, and the other two weren't simple revisions, either.

And then there's my next trilogy that I'm still brainstorming. I'm trying to really plot the thing out, not scene-by-scene perhaps, but close to it. During this process (just like my last novel), I realized that I need to tell "what came before". In other words, I had an idea for a story, and as I started filling in the exposition, I realized it was really interesting stuff and probably belonged in the story, and so my planned book became book 2 in the trilogy and the stuff I thought was going to be exposition is now going to be book 1. I'm excited to get started on it, but like I said, I don't want to jump in without knowing more. I've taken too many wrong turns in the past and wasted tons of writing because I didn't plan properly. It sure makes me feel like I'm not doing anything, though, all this thinkin and stuff.

Anyway, it was good to start writing this new story. Hopefully it'll take about a week, and then I can let it marinate for a while before working on final revisions.

That story does indeed sound awesome. As a mom, I generally stay away from anything that involves kids and traumas, but the addition of a lunatic helpful guy makes it much more alluring. But kid trauma kind of has that Vengeance-Trail-of-Josie-Wales thing that is so painful to get through.

But I digress! I actually clicked over here to ask you if you happen to know if Ian Tregillis is coming to World Fantasy Con this year? It'd be awfully nice to see him again, and since he's ensconced in the bowels of supersecretgovland, I don't know how to drop him a line.

Also, on an unrelated note, the thing one usually puts on one's cat is, I believe, toothpaste, or else baby footgear.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been changing emails and my LJ forwarding got screwed up. You know, I'm not sure if Ian's coming. He came to last year's but I haven't really spoken to him a whole lot since then.

P.S. I have a heck of a time with divining who is who on LJ, so my apologies, but I'm not sure who you are. Have we met?

Okay, I can see I better get a more representative userpic! I'm sure you probably will remember me only as a face in the lobby of World Fantasy last year. I'm Rachel Barth, E!'s friend. I have dark hair and eyes, silver glasses with rectangular frames, medium height, a little on the chunky side. I have impressive frontal adornment. You and I probably chatted 3 or 4 times over the Con, at least twice in company with Ian. Did you have lunch with E! and me one day? Now my memory is fading, too.
So, anyway, it's not as if I were Ian's long-lost cousin or any such thing. I just really enjoyed his whole uber-brainy-guy vibe and don't want to completely lose track of him.
So if you can help, that's awesome! But if not, I still love you the same as before.

Shadows In Mirrors
Brad,

What a great story. Thanks for letting me read it. I think you did an amazing job with it and Shadows In Mirrors will be perfect in the Dimensions Next Door Anthology.

Thanks, Paul. You know, it's funny. I had forgotten about the title of this post when I worked on the title for the story. I ended up nearly the same when I (re)created it a few days ago, just before I sent it to you. I guess that's a good sign I'm not going senile, right? No, wait. Maybe it *is* a sign I'm going senile since I didn't remember the post...
